An individual who leaves a legacy and possess leadership often leaves a positive mark on the world. Juliette Low is the perfect candidate for this theme because through her leadership of young girls, she leaves a legacy for them to use in their lives. Juliette Low was compassionate and cared for all of her Girl Scouts much in the way a mother does for he children. I chose Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts, because she created an organization that would produce global leaders and positively impact my life. I began Girl Scouts when I entered Kindergarten. As I grew older, Girl Scouts developed me into a responsible young girl by going to overnight summer camp, leading younger girls, volunteering, and planning community events.
I conducted my research by reading biographical books and consulting the Girl Scout website for information. I visited biographical websites about Juliette Low, and also read blogs written by former Girl Scouts. I interviewed Kelly Parisi, who is the Chief Communications Executive for Girl Scouts of the USA, Randa Robison, a Girl scout Leader who I have volunteered at summer camp with, and Samantha Keck, who is a Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Docent. I visited Juliette Gordon Low's house in Savannah, Georgia and went on a tour of the house conducted by a former Girl Scout. I was directed to the Georgia Historical Society's Archives, and found biographical information on Juliette Low.
I have competed in National History Day for the past couple of years, and for each competition I have used websites to display my entry. I feel that I can best exhibit my research neatly, concisely, and professionally with a website. An electronic ways of showing my information forces me to be organized and not lose any of my information. I created my website by selecting a template, and adding photographs and text to support my thesis.
Juliette Gordon Low was a leader that used her passion, humanity, and benevolence to start an organization a century ago that continues to empower young women all over the world. She gave girls the opportunity to explore activities that were only permitted for boys in a post-Victorian society. Although deaf, Juliette Low heard a wanting from girls to grow-not as submissive house wives that society then dictated, but as independent adventurers. Juliette Low was a nurturer and treated all of her Girl Scouts like her own children. She teaches Girl Scouts that their future holds endless possibilities. Members in Girl Scouts are taught to be self-sufficient and not rely on another person for their personal success. Even though her organization was founded over a century ago,Juliette Low’s legacy lives on because of her impact leadership and the tools she gave young females.
