Juliette "Daisy" Low
Juliette "Daisy" Magill Kinzie Gordon Low was born October 31, 1860 in Savannah, Georgia to a family of successful cotton planters. Juliette Low was born shortly before the Civil War. Her father supported the South's endeavors to secede, however her mother disagreed. Juliette Low attended private boarding schools in the eastern United States like Mesdemoiselles Charbonniers, which would educate her on how to be a socially accepting lady. She acquired a talent for painting, sculpting, and loved the company of animals. While on recreational trip to Europe, she met her future husband, William "Billow" Low, a wealthy Englishman. William Low was a successful cotton merchant and married Juliette in 1886 without her father's consent. As the newlywed couple left the wedding, a piece of rice was thrown and landed in Juliette Low's ear. This damaged her hearing, and because of a doctor who tried to remove the grain of rice, had completely lost her hearing in one ear.
The Low's spent much of their married life in England and Scotland, attending parties hosted by socialites and hunting. Their marriage was uneventful as William traveled and wasn't faithful to his wife. Juliette Low was very embarrassed to know about his various affair because at that time a woman's success was determined by the amount of children she bore and the happiness of her marriage. Unfortunately, Juliette Low lacked both of those. Juliette Low became estranged from her husband and filed for divorce. Their union ended in 1905 upon William's death. William Low's estate was left to his mistress, which humiliated Juliette Low. She contested the will and was awarded a part of his estate.
